My subject matter explores discarded items, using language and pattern to create a dialogue with the viewer. Choosing which phrases to use has been a really interesting process, for example some of my favourite phrases that I grew up with in Jamaica would leave most people outside the island completely stumped. So I have tried to use phrases that have filtered down through popular culture. My very first being "We could have been anything that we wanted to be" a line from one of the songs in Bugsy Malone, it seemed to fit perfectly with what my discarded appliances were singing about (in my head). I can still see them side-by-side in a chorus line flashing glimpses of their wiring while sashaying about and swinging their plugs and cords behind them. It has become a bit like an episode of Creature Comforts, as I contemplate my appliances, big and small, I can hear them waxing on about their dreams, hopes and fears.

Issac Newton proclaimed that “apple attracted by the gravity, shall fall whether it is or not God’s will”. The catholic as scientific dogma also began with an apple.
Drawing with an eraser refers to a ”deleted portrait” of Zdravko, presenting its negative image and allowing his existence. At the end apple falls instead of him, making his liberation complete.

The word “nocturnales” does not exist.
But in the dark side of one’s mind.
Nocturnales is a blend of two entities: the nocturne and the saturnalia, the licentious Roman festival during which the "whole mob has let itself go in pleasures" (Epistles by Seneca, XVIII.3).
Nocturnales VII and Are You Afraid Of Silence In Painting? encompass different levels of interpretations regarding the body and its powerful legacy in language and dialogue. It conveys the idea of how the body and its sexual characteristics may be a powerful alternative to language when words are too poor or inadequate. In our society, new methods of communication have ostracized the role of the body and disembodied language. In this perspective, these works show how harmful to humanity a virtual society may be and enlighten the importance of communication and dialogue between people and cultures.

'Ghosts City'

Urban areas “Mush” and “Sheram” in Gyumri, Armenia” were initiated as a reaction on the earthquake in Armenia in 1988 and to solve the resulting disastrous housing situation. During construction the political situation in Armenia underwent a fundamental transformation with the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the establishment of national independence for Armenia. In consequence the initiated housing projects of “Mush” and “Sheram” were outdistanced by this transformation as a result of new ideals, goals and concepts. The housing project was in some parts never completed and developed in following years to a kind of ghost city. “Ghost city” as it materializes ideals of a passed order which were not further integrated in the following urban development. Through the physical presence of “Mush” and “Sheram” the uncompleted urban areas appear as constant reminder of this turn of time, forcing a mental occupation with this appearance today.

The starting point for my work is language and communication and a notion of the act seeing as an act of reading leading to (mis)interpretation (whether conscious or subconscious).

My source material is most commonly found in the plethora of public languages of signs, symbols and data systems which provide direction, information, prohibition, caution or other messages. I counterpoint these with the intimacy of private and personal languages to be found both in the public realm and in the tactile material of the artwork itself.

'Truth coat', 'Lies dress' 'Secrets slip'

"After recently relocating to the South I realised that I had to make a decision about every new person I met, based just on what they told me. I was invisible in this new environment and had no shared history with any of these people, I had to trust my own judgement and instinct.
Using this process to disrupt dialogue with people I had existing relationships with, I sent all my family and friends a postcard requesting they reply anonymously telling me something about themselves that was true, a lie or a secret. So with this request I subverted our usual means of communication, and wiped out our shared experiences.
I ‘processed’ the replies by hand embroidering them onto found garments as I perceived them, a coat for truths, a dress for lies, and a slip for secrets."

"Interlog mural"

"loyalty is an airy neurotic" judges "sterex" and is right beyond doubt. "sterex" is a digital aphorism machine, a computer program, thought out by sibyll kalff and donald lessau, who have an exhibition right on Good Friday in the "galerie am schlachthof". marcel duchamp would have been utterly pleased with their talkative invention, they would have probably only to fear artcritics like us. for the one-time price that equals my pay-off for this article, "sterex" diffuses nonsense of the highest niveau: " the formalization if the art-order funcitons objectively as the continous pattern of a singular story". there is not much more to add to that. 'Surveillance'

Surveillance
is sickening
yet somehow satisfying:

first
the thought
that her best kiss
was caught on camera

then
the knowledge
that it would survive her,
stored in the vault

of her student halls.

‘Surveillance’ explores a character's realisation that one of her most cherished and intimate moments has been recorded on CCTV. Far from being invasive, the footage is comforting as, stored on a hard-drive, it will outlive her memory. It is therefore timeless. In this way, it is a bit like a poem.'

An LCD Screen is housed in a small bottle. The green and red lights on the harbour wall flash in a distinct series of dots and dashes. A message appears to be being communicated in morse code. In a world of increasingly electronic exchange our communication and understanding are increasingly reliant on systems of 'reading' and translating data. A simple message of dots and dashes is encoded within a video signal. An understanding of the message requires not only an understanding of morse but also a means to translate the video signal and a means to power the device to read the signal.

My sculptural work uses household objects, such as crockery, cutlery and furniture, in conjunction with fabricated elements as a metaphor exploring communication and connections between people, minds and thoughts. The works in Subversive Correspondence exhibition, Lady and the Tramp and Butcher’s Hooks, both explore the idea of a domestic space as a place of communication.
